We’ve been busy since last May, when along with health and environmental organizations we launched the Last Chance Alliance. We are urging California Governor Gavin Newsom to put an end to fracking and dangerous drilling practices that threaten our health and increase the risk of breast cancer. But while Governor Newsom clearly understands the threat fossil fuel production poses to our health and environment, he has yet to take action.

That’s why we need your help.

Sign Last Chance Alliance’s petition calling on Governor Newsom to protect our health from fossil fuels.

Hundreds of chemicals used to drill and process fossil fuels are linked to breast cancer, as well as other diseases and disorders, and California is one of the largest oil producers in the US. Low-income neighborhoods, communities of color, workers, and frontline communities are disproportionately impacted by the toxic hazards of fossil fuel extraction. And no one is safe from exposure to toxic chemicals used by the state’s oil and gas industries, because California grows more of the nation’s food than any other part of the country.

As our federal government threatens our health and that of future generations by destroying policies that protect our air and water, Governor Newsom is uniquely positioned to take up the mantle of environmental leadership. By taking action to stop investing in the fossil fuel industry in California, he can be a model for the rest of the country and the world.

Here are three actions that we’re calling on Governor Newsom to take NOW to protect Californians from this health and climate emergency:

  1. STOP new fossil fuel projects that pump more climate-changing carbon into our atmosphere
  2. DROP existing oil production that pollutes California’s air
  3. ROLL out a 2,500-foot setback policy that protects frontline communities living near dangerous oil drilling.

If we don’t take action now, we’ll pay the price with our health and our lives for many years to come.
